Common questions

How do I work out what an appliance costs to run?

Multiply its power in watts by the hours you use it, divide by 1,000 to get kWh, then multiply by your electricity price per kWh. This calculator does it for you and lets you try any usage pattern.

What electricity price should I use?

We prefill the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh. If you know your own rate — on your bill as “unit rate” — type it in for an exact figure.

Where do the appliance wattages come from?

They are typical published values from public sources such as the Energy Saving Trust and manufacturer specifications, shown as a range because real models vary. See our data and sources page.
